Answer: (c)
Statements (i) and (iii) are correct.
- Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) during first trimester is generally safe.
- Intrauterine device like copper
-T are effective contraceptives.
Question : 2
Assertion :
Amniocentesis is often misused.
Reason:
Amniocentesis is meant for determining the genetic disorders in the foetus, but it is being used to determine the sex of the foetus, to kill the normal female foetus.

Answer: (b)
Question : 3
Select the correct statements regarding diaphragm as contraceptive device from the given options.
- They act as physical barrier for sperm entry.
- They are placed to cover the cervical region during coitus.
- They are introduced into the uterus to prevent implantation.
- They act as spermicidal agents to increase their contraceptive effectiveness
View Answer
Answer: (b)
The diaphragm is one of a barrier method of contraception. It is a shallow, dome-shaped cup with a flexible rim and made of silicon. It is inserted into the female reproductive tract to cover the cervix. To be effective in preventing pregnancy, diaphragms need to be used in combination with spermicide, which is a chemical that kills sperm.
Question : 4

View Answer
Answer: (a)
The females wanting to delay pregnancy or space children should use IUDs, i.e. Intra Uterine Devices. These provide long term but reversible contraception. Other options like tubectomy is an irreversible method and femidoms, vaults and caps are barrier methods which do not provide long term contraception.
Question : 5
Foetal sex can be determined by examining cells from the amniotic fluid by looking for–

View Answer
Answer: (c)
The correct surgical procedure as a contraceptive method is vasectomy performed in males, while in females, is called tubectomy.
Question : 9
Assertion (A) Sterilisation is a surgical method of contraception.
Reason (R) It blocks gamete transport and thereby prevents conception
View Answer
Answer: (b)
Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion. Sterilisation is a surgical method of contraception as it blocks the transport of gametes and hence prevent fertilisation. The process is called as vasectomy in males and tubectomy in females.
Question : 10

View Answer
Answer: (d)
Difference between ZIFT and IUT lies in the number of the cells. As in ZIFT, the embryo or zygote transfer is done up to 8 blastomere stage and in IUT, the embryo transfer is done when embryo is above 8 blastomere stage.
Question : 11
Which of the following given statements are not correct?
- A statutory ban has been implemented on amniocentesis because of its regular misuse.
- Surgical methods are also called sterilisation as they block the release of gametesinto secretions.
- All sexually transmitted diseases are completely curable.
- MTPs are relatively safe up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
View Answer
Answer: (a)
Statements III and IV are incorrect. They can be corrected as
- Sexually transmitted diseases are completely curable except hepatitis-B, genital herpes and HIV infections.
- MTPs are relatively safer up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. Rest other statements are correct.
Question : 12
Which of the following cannot be detected in a developing fetus by amniocentesis?
View Answer
Answer: (c)
Jaundice cannot be detected in a developing foetus by amniocentesis. It is a foetal sex determination test based on chromosomal pattern in the amniotic fluid surrounding the developing embryo. It is now legally ban in India.
Question : 13
In vitro fertilisation is a technique that involves transfer of which one of the following into the Fallopian tube?
View Answer
Answer: (a)
Question : 15
The permissible use of the technique amniocentesis is for
View Answer
Answer: (d)
Amniocentesis is withdrawal of a sample of the fluid (amniotic fluid) surrounding a fetus in the uterus by piercing the amniotic sac through the abdominal wall, under direct ultrasound guidance. As the amniotic fluid contains cells from the fetus, cell cultures enable chromosome patterns to be studied so that prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities can be made. Certain metabolic errors and other abnormalities, such as spina bifida, can also be diagnosed prenatally from analysis of the cells or of the fluid.
As this technique also helps in detection of sex of the unborn fetus, it has been banned in order to legally check increasing female feticides.
Question : 16
Which one of the following is the most widely accepted method of contraception in India, as at present ?
View Answer
Answer: (d)
Intra uterine device (IUD) is a method of contraception in India. The IUD is inserted in the woman's uterus through the cervix.
Question : 17
Refer the following statement and answer the question. "Inability of an individual to inseminate the female or due to very low sperm counts in ejaculates leads to "A". It could be corrected by "B". In "B" the "C" is collected and artificially introduced either into the vagina or into the "D" (IUI - intra-uterine insemination) of the female." Identify A to D.
A | B | C | D | |
(a) | STD | Embryo transfer | Urine | Fallopian tube |
(b) | MTP | GIFT | Ovum | Uterus |
(c) | Infertility | Artificial technique | Semen | Uterus |
(d) | Infertility | ZIFT | Sperm | Fallopian tube |
View Answer
Answer: (c)
Inability of an individual to inseminate the female or due to very low sperm counts in ejaculates leads to infertility. It could be corrected by artificial technique. In artificial technique the semen is collected and artificially introduced either into the vagina or into the uterus (IUI - intra-uterine insemination) of the female.
Question : 18
From the sexually transmitted diseases mentioned below, identify the one which does not specifically affect the sex organs.
View Answer
Answer: (a)
AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) is a set of symptoms caused by HIV virus in humans. It is transmitted through sexual contact from infected to a healthy person. The HIV virus does not directly affect sex organs as such but produces other set of symptoms in the body of infected person.
Question : 19
Which of the following is incorrect regarding vasectomy?
View Answer
Answer: (a)
Vasectomy is a surgical contraception method performed in males. In vasectomy, a small part of the vas deferens is removed or tied up through a small cut on the scrotum. This prevents sperm transport. Vasectomy has a poor reversibility. There is no effect on libido and erectile functioning. Seminal vesicles are one pair of sac like structures which join vasa deferentia to form ejaculatory duct. They secrete seminal fluid which contains fructose, prostaglandins and clotting protein, but no sperms. In a male who has undergone vasectomy, the ejaculatory duct will receive seminal fluid but due to cut in vasa deferentia sperms will not be transported from epididymis hence the semen will lack sperms.
