FREE NEET Biology Practice MCQ Test: Reproduction In Organisms Exercise 3 Questions Answers With Detailed Explanations [PDF]
Question : 1
After culturing the anther of a plant, a few diploid plants were found along with haploid plants. The diploid plants could have arisen from
View Answer
Answer: (a)
Anther, a male reproductive organ, is diploid (2n) in chromosome numbers. As a result of microsporogenesis, tetrads of microspores are formed from a single spore mother cell. They are known as pollen grains after their release from tetrads. Pollen grain is the haploid (n) small, male gametophyte covered by two membranes outer ‘exine’ and inner ‘intine’ and divide mitotically to produce a bigger vegetative cell(n) and a smaller generative cell(n). Therefore, if we culture the whole anther then we will get both haploid plantlets from pollen grains and diploid plantlets from anther wall (vegetative cell).
Question : 2
Earthworms, sponges, tapeworms are
View Answer
Answer: (d)
Earthworm, sponges, tapeworms are bisexual animals and hermaphrodites as they possess both male and female reproductive organs.
Question : 4
Which of the following statements is correct?
View Answer
Answer: (c)
Statement in option (c) is correct. Rest of the statements are incorrect and can be corrected as
- All the individuals of a species have different lifespan.
- Smaller organisms do not always have a shorter lifespan and vice-versa.
- Some organisms may have a lifespan of several hundred years.
Question : 5
Match the column I with column II.
Column I | Column II |
A. Animals which give birth to young one | 1. Hydra |
B. Animal which produces bud | 2. Planaria |
C. An animal which shows regeneration | 3. Viviparous |
D. Provides nutrition to the developing embryo from the mother | 4. Placenta |

Answer: (a)
Question : 6
Monoecious plant of Chara shows occurrence of :
View Answer
Answer: (c)
Male sex organ is called antheridium or globule while female sex organ is called oogonium. They develop on the same branchlet in the same plant in Chara.
Question : 7
Assertion:
Zygote is a single cell.
Reason:
Two haploid cell fused to form two diploid cell.
View Answer
Answer: (c)
Two Haploid cell form one diploid cell by sexual reproduction. In higher organism diploid is the most common nature of cell.
Question : 8
Read the following statements.
- The vegetative phase is of same duration in different organisms.
- Clear-cut vegetative, reproductive and senescent phases can be observed in monocarpic plants.
- Bambusa differs fromStrobilanthes kunthiana (Neelakurinji) in the length of juvenile phase and being monocarpic.
- The end of juvenile/vegetative phase in angiosperms is seen when they come to flower.
- Sexual mode of reproduction is present in most animals.
Which of the above statement is/are incorrect?
View Answer
Answer: (d)
Statements I and III are incorrect and can be corrected as
- The vegetative phase is of different durartion in different organisms.
- Bambusa differs from Strobilanthes kunthiana in the length of juvenile phase, but both plants are monocarpic. Rest of the statements are correct.
Question : 9
Which of the following statement(s) is/are false about internal fertilization?
- Male gametes are motile.
- Male gametes are non-motile.
- Male gametes are produced in large number.
- Male gametes are produced in small number.
- There is a significant reduction in the number of eggs produced.

Answer: (c)
Question : 11
Banana fruits are seedless, because
View Answer
Answer: (c)
Most of banana varieties are triploid and triploidy is associated with seedlessness.
Question : 12
Select the correct sequence from the following.
- Juvenile phase Senescent phase Reproductive phase
- Juvenile phase Reproductive phase Senescent phase
- Reproductive phase Juvenile phase Senescen tphase
- Vegetative phase Reproductive phase Senescent phase

Answer: (d)
Question : 14
The condition, in which, both male and female reproductive organs are found on the same plant, is called
View Answer
Answer: (d)
Hermaphrodite/bisexual/monoecious/homothallic are terms used when both the male and female reproductive organs are present in same organism. Hermaphrodite is used for animals. Bisexual and monoecious are used for both animal and plant. Homothallic is used for fungi.
Question : 17
Which one of the following generates new genetic combinations leading to variation? NEET 2016, 13
View Answer
Answer: (c)
Sexual reproduction brings about variation through genetic recombinations due to the participation of two parents. In this, the random union of gametes contributes in forming new combinations of characters.
Question : 18
Read the following statements about asexual reproduction and select the correct ones.
- It involves a single parent.
- It is slower than sexual reproduction.
- It produces progeny that are genetically identical with the parent, but not with one another
- The progeny of asexual reproduction can be termed as clones.
View Answer
Answer: (c)
Statements I and IV are correct. But statements II and III are incorrect and can be corrected as
- Asexual reproduction is faster than sexual reproduction.
- Asexual reproduction produces progeny that are genetically identical with one another as well as with the parent.
Question : 19
Viviparity is found in
View Answer
Answer: (b)
Viviparous animals give birth to young ones. This includes all placental mammals. The zygote develops into a young one inside the body of the female. After attaining a certain stage of growth, the young ones are delivered out of the body of the female organism.
Question : 20
Vegetative propagation in Pistia occurs by
View Answer
Answer: (c)
In Pistia (water lettuce), vegetative propagation occurs by offset where one internode long runners grows horizontally along the soil surface and gives rise to new plants either from axillary or terminal buds.
