Question-1

Choose the incorrect statements.
  1. The essence of Darwinian theory about evolution can be seen in the phenomenon of natural selection.
  2. The rate of appearance of new forms is not linked to the evolution.
  3. Adaptive ability is a complete evolution.
  4. Mutations are random and directionless.
Choose the correct option.

(a)

(b)

(c)

(d)

Explanation:

Answer: (a)

Statements II and III are incorrect and can be corrected as

  • Evolution is always considered as the appearance of characters should also be transmitted to the offspring otherwise the changes are lost.
  • Adaptive ability cannot be considered as evolution because this ability may be temporary due to the environmental changes.

Rest of the statements are correct.

Question-2

Evolution of different species in a given area starting from a point and spreading to other geographical areas is known as

(a)

(b)

(c)

(d)

Explanation:

Answer: (b)

Adaptive radiation (divergent evolution) is the evolution from one species of animals or plants of a number of different forms. As the original population increases in size it spreads out from its centre of origin to exploit new habitats and food sources. In time, this results in a number of populations each adapted to its particular habitat, eventually these populations will differ from each other sufficiently to become new species.

Question-3

Although all mammals whale, dolphin, bat, monkey and horse have some important common characters, but they also show conspicuous differences. This is due to the phenomenon of

(a)

(b)

(c)

(d)

Question-4

Industrial melanism is an example of

(a)

(b)

(c)

(d)

Explanation:

Answer: (c)

Industrial melanism (In England) is an example of natural selection. Natural selection is the process by which the organisms that are best suited for their environment survive and reproduce.

Before industrialization (1850s), it was observed that there were more white winged moths (Biston betularia) on trees than dark winged or melanised moths (Biston carbonara). Because there were more white coloured lichens that covered the trees. Hence, white winged moths were able to camouflage themselves and survived. But the dark coloured moths were picked out by predators.

After industrialization (1920), there were more dark winged moths and less white winged moths. Because, the tree trunks became dark due to industrial smoke and soot. Under this condition the white winged moth did not survive as the predators could identify them easily. However, dark winged moth survived because of suitable dark background.
